Tour Queswachaka Bridge 1D

Description

“Q’eswachaka” is a native name formed by two words in Quechua: “Q’eswa”, that means “to braid” and “Chaka”, which means “Bridge”. This bridge is very special because it’s built in an original Incan way with a special herb (q’oya). The materials and techniques of the construction have been handed down from generations since the Incan era when the first bridge was built in the XV century. For this reason the tour to the Q’eswachaka Bridge is a very special experience.

The impressive bridge is 33 meters long and 1.20 meters broad and it balances 15 meters above the river. The bridge is re-built every year by the villagers. About 1000 villagers from the communities of Winchiri, Ccolana, Quehue, Chaupibanda and Choccayhua help with building this unique bridge with Incan roots.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Four lagoons – Queswachaca

The tour begins in the city of Cusco by picking you up at your hotel at 7:00 a.m. before heading to south-east. After traveling for about 2 hours we visit the four lagoons: Pomacanchi, Acopia, Asnaqocha and Pampamarca or Tungasuca.  After a few peaceful moments at the lagoons we continue to the next site that is a small volcano close to the village of Yanaoca. Finally we reach the Apurimac River and the impressive Incan bridge.  This hanging bridge is made of vegetal fiber (ichu) and is located over the Apurimac River in the district of Quehue. The existence of this bridge dates back to the Incan era, the renovation and maintenance is made once a year by locals of the four communities around the bridge. Before beginning to renovate the bridge an offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth) is made as a signal of respect and gratitude.

We have the opportunity to cross the Incan bridge twice that is if you dare to. You will feel a great emotion by crossing it, perhaps like a Chaski (Incan messenger). When we return there is a delicious lunch waiting for us in Combapata before we visit a colonial Incan bridge where you can see the difference between the two bridges. This interesting tour ends in Cusco at around 5:00 p.m.
