Description
It is the heart of the Biosphere Reserve, it is one of the most important protected areas in the South American tropics located in the eastern franc of the Andean mountains. The Manu National Park protects a sequence of intact natural landscape that descends from 4,200 mt. Towards the extensive rainforest in the Amazon area.
The Manu is the refuge of many species of endangered animals, which includes the jaguar, black alligator, giant otter, harpy eagle, etc. The Manu Reserve today considered the only home on earth with a great biodiversity of flora and fauna. The Manu houses an average of 860 species of birds that includes 7 species of colorful parrots, 84 species of mammals that include 13 species of monkeys and thousands of species of insects and plants.
Itinerary
Day 01: Cusco – Pilcopata
We leave Cusco early by bus and travel through Andean mountains, beautiful landscapes, rural folk communities such as Paucartambo and Ninamaraca (chullpas or funeral tombs) that belong to the pre-Inca Lupacas culture. Then we climb the last mountain to reach Acjanaco, entrance to the Manu National Park, from where we descend to the lush cloud forest, which houses a wide variety of flora and fauna. Being an ideal place of epiphytes, orchids, broméelas, etc.
Then walk inside the cloud forest and appreciate the National bird of Peru. The colorful Gallito de las Rocas in its mating dance ritual, as well as toucans, trogons, quetzals, monkeys and hopefully the spectacled bear from South America (Tremantus ornaments), continuing our journey towards the Kcosñipata valley to spend the first night.
Day 02: Pilcopata – Boca Manu
We wake up early in the morning under the chorus of birds, to start our walk in the high Amazon forest and visit agricultural plantations of coca, pineapple, cassava and other original products of the place.
Arriving at the port of Atalaya to embark on our motor boat and sail 5 hours through the turbulent waters of the Alto Madre de Dios river, in the direction of Boca Manu, having interesting breaks to visit native communities such as Diamante (Yine or Piro group) , continuing our expedition we arrive at the town of Boca Manu and hostel.
Day 03: Boca manu – Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
Very early in the morning we begin our expedition through the calm waters of the Manu River, to visit the Limonal Control post where we will register and enter the Tourist Zone of the Manu Reserved Zone. In the course of the trip we will carefully find white alligators and huge black alligators, hundreds of turtles and the world’s largest rodent, capybara; at the same time parrots, colorful macaws and hopefully the impressive jaguar; We arrive at the hostel. Immediately explore the lush forest of mainland or primary forest.
Day 04: Albergue Casa Matsiguenka
It is the most moving place to see the flora and fauna of the Amazon. Then we will go through the virgin forest in the direction of the most famous lake in Manu, the Salvador lake or Salvador cocha, to tour in a catamaran that will facilitate finding a great variety of birds, monkeys, black alligators and with luck the river wolf or giant otter (Pteronura Brasiliensis). Endangered species is seen at its greatest time of the day swimming, fishing, eating and playing among them.
After a great lunch typical of the area, navigate for a short time along the Manu River and walk 4 hours or more, through the forest towards the second most important lake in Manu called Otorongo and we are located in the observation tower of 25 meters high to see the giant emerging trees of cedar, mahogany ceibas and the famous rubber or rubber trees. This being home to many mammals that are occasionally found as Capuchin monkeys, spider monkeys and wild pigs or pecars; At night we can explore the forest using our good lanterns or lamps where we will find a wide variety of insects, toads, frogs, or we will see the lake in search of some nocturnal creature such as the colorful eyes of alligators, etc. Return overnight.
Day 05: Alberge Casa Matsiguenka – Yanayacu Lodge
This day we will slowly descend the streams of the impressive Manu River, to stop at Boca Manu and enjoy some cold or icy drinks to continue our journey against the stream of the Madre de Dios high river for 3 hours, giving us the greatest opportunity to see some Migratory birds such as Osprey, hawks, jabirú, pink spatula, etc. And at nightfall we will camp on an appropriate beach of the Madre de Dios River.
Day 06: Yanayacu – Pilcopata
Again in the morning after a delicious breakfast we return in our comfortable boat, trying to fish and enjoying the magnificent views of the Andes
, like the hot springs where we can enjoy lunch. Arrival at the port of Atalaya, where our bus will be waiting to drive us towards Pilcopata. Overnight last night.
Day 07: Pilcopata – Cusco
Very early on the bus back, again appreciate the famous cock of the rocks in San Pedro, where we will have breakfast and continue our return to the ancient capital of the Incas; Cusco and arrival at 4:00 pm.
