The Inca Trail to Machupicchu is listed as one of the best treks in the world for tis beauty and incredible nature; it’s a spectacular experience that you have to do at least once in your life. It’s 42 km long and stretches from KM 82 to the citadel of Machu Picchu. People from all over the world come to Peru to trek it.
Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco -Wayllabamba
E pick you up from your hotel very early and take you to Km 82 where we will be arriving approx 11:00 a.m. before beginning the trek. The first day is beautiful and the first kilometers are easy to walk. We have a beautiful view of the snow-capped Veronica and also the Vilcanota river until we reach the archaeological site of Llactapata where we’ll have lunch before continuing towards our first campsite in Wayllabamba where we will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 2: Wayllabamba – Warmiwañusca – Pacaymayo
After breakfast we begin the most difficult, but not imposible, part of the trek where we walk until reaching the highest point of the Inca Trail from where you will have an incredible panoramic view of the area and you will also be able to observe different microclimates. After about 3 hours of trekking we pass the peak called Warmiwañusca or Dead Womans pass that is situated at about 4200 m.a.s.l, here you will feel satisfied to have reach the highest point. After this fabulous experience we have lunch and continue descending until reaching Pacamayo where we have dinner and spend the night.
Day 3: Pacaymayo – Puya Patamarka – Wiñayhuayna
After breakfast we begin walking until ascending the second most important pass of the Inca Trail that is situated at 3850 m.a.s.l. where we reach the archaeological site of Runkarakay where we will have a guided tour of Runkarakay as well as the citadel of Sayacmara. After the guided visit we continue walking until reaching the archaeological site of Puyupatamarca which is another important monument, here we’ll have lunch before we continue to the last camp site Wiñayhuayna (Forever young) where we’ll have a guided visit of the impressive archaeological site. After the visit we’ll have dinner and spend the last night.
Day 4: Wiñay Huayna – Machu Picchu – Cusco
After an early breakfast we continue our trek so we can reach Machupicchu in time for the sun rise. After about an hour of walking we pass through the Inti Punku or Sun Gate also known as the entrance to Machupicchu, here we can appreciate the most impressive panoramic view of the citadel. After this experience we will have about 3 hours to visit all the places of the Inca citadel, we’ll visit the enclosures, squares, sacred fountains, temples as well as the urban and agriculture sector. After our guided visit you will get some free time to take photos. We take the bus back to the village of Aguas Calientes (if you want to you can stay up at Machupicchu). In the evening/night we take the train back to Cusco.
