Description
The condor viewpoint is situated in the canyon of the Apurimac River at 1500 m.a.s.l. in the community of Chonta in the district of Limatambo. This is a new tourist circuit for the ones that want something out of the ordinary, and even more for the nature lovers. Here we can observe birds like eagles, sparrowhawks, kestrels, hummingbirds among others. During this trek we’ll visit beautiful archaeological sites like; Quillarumiyoq and Tarawasi as well as natural attractions like mountains, gorges, rivers and snow-capped peaks before seeing the majestic flight of the condor in its natural habitat where around 200 Andean condors live.
Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Quillarumiyoc – Tarawasi – Condor Canyon
We pick you up at your hotel around 7:30 a.m. and head towards the village of Limatambo, on the road we will visit the 2 important archaeological sites of Quillarumiyoc (The temple of the moon and fertility) and Tarawasi (Incas guesthouse) where our guide will help us to understand a bit more about the Andean world view and it’s architecture. We continue our journey until reaching the Huayronca bridge where we take a dirt road to the community of Chonta at 3400 m.a.s.l. During this journey we make a few stops to take photos of Salkantay and the Limatambo Valley. We reach Chonta around noon and have a delicious lunch while looking at Salkantay.
After our lunch we begin our 1.5 hour long trek on a broad and beautiful trail with a tempered climate until reaching the Condor Canyon at 3500 m.a.s.l from this point we have the opportunity to see the impressive Andean condor in its natural habitat. We sit down at the viewpoint and wait for the condors go back to their nests from their daily activities which is usually around 3:00 p.m. Here we have the opportunity to see the condors and take photos as close as 20 meters from the condors during 2 hours. After seeing the condors we return by foot to the village of Chonta where our transportation is waiting to take us back to the city of Cusco where we’ll be arriving around 7:30 p.m.
